Monday Read: The Unshakeable Love of God
Paul cataloged threats to his security: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?" (Romans 8:35). These weren't hypothetical dangers. Paul experienced all of them - beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, hungry, threatened constantly. Yet none of these circumstances severed him from Christ's love.
His conclusion was emphatic: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39). This is comprehensive list covering every possible threat. Nothing - absolutely nothing - can sever you from God's love.
This matters profoundly when circumstances feel like evidence that God doesn't love you. Your prayers go unanswered - does God still love you? Your suffering continues unrelieved - does God still love you? Your hopes remain unfulfilled - does God still love you? Circumstances scream "God doesn't care!" Feelings whisper "You're abandoned." But truth declares: nothing separates you from God's love.
The key phrase is "in Christ Jesus our Lord." God's love for you isn't based on your performance, dependent on your circumstances, or conditional on your faithfulness. It's secured in Christ. When Father looks at you, he sees you wrapped in Christ's righteousness, covered by Christ's sacrifice, united with Christ through Spirit. His love for his Son extends to you because you're in his Son.
This destroys the lie that sin separates you from God's love. Sin grieves God, disrupts fellowship, and has consequences - but it doesn't sever his love for those in Christ. David committed adultery and murder, yet God called him "a man after my own heart" (Acts 13:22). Peter denied Jesus three times, yet Jesus restored and commissioned him. Your worst sin doesn't make God stop loving you.
Neither do your failures. You failed at that relationship, that job, that responsibility - God still loves you. You didn't achieve what you hoped, reach the goals you set, or become who you imagined - God still loves you. Your unrealized potential doesn't diminish his love. Your disappointing performance doesn't reduce his affection. His love isn't performance-based; it's Christ-secured.
Nor do your circumstances. You're sick, poor, struggling, lonely - God still loves you. Bad things happen to people God loves because we live in fallen world under sin's curse. Job lost everything yet was "blameless and upright" (Job 1:1). Lazarus died though Jesus loved him (John 11:3-5). Circumstances don't measure God's love; the cross does.
The cross is the ultimate proof of God's love. "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). He didn't wait for you to get better. He didn't love you because you deserved it. He loved you while you were still enemy, rebel, sinner - and gave his Son to die for you. That love doesn't fluctuate based on your current behavior or circumstances.
This should produce both security and humility. Security because nothing threatens God's love for you. Circumstances can worsen, suffering can intensify, failures can multiply - but you remain loved. His love is unshakeable foundation when everything else collapses. Humility because you've done nothing to earn this love and can do nothing to increase it. It's pure grace from beginning to end.
Practically, this means interpreting circumstances differently. When trials come, don't immediately assume God is punishing you or has withdrawn his love. He might be refining you, teaching you, or allowing natural consequences - but he hasn't stopped loving you. When prayers go unanswered, don't conclude God doesn't care. He might have different answer, better timing, or purposes you can't see - but he hasn't stopped loving you.
It also means you can be honest with God about struggles without fear he'll reject you. The Psalms are full of raw honesty - complaints, questions, accusations even. David wasn't worried that honest lament would make God stop loving him. He knew God's love was secure enough to handle his honesty. You can bring your real self to God - doubts, failures, anger, confusion - without pretending to be more spiritual than you are.
As July ends, remember this: nothing that happened this month separated you from God's love. Not your failures, not your sins, not your disappointments, not your unanswered prayers. You're held by love that won't let go. Death can't take it. Life can't change it. Angels can't enhance it. Demons can't destroy it. Your worst day can't diminish it. Your best day can't increase it. It's constant, secure, unshakeable love rooted in Christ. That's your foundation. Build your life on it.
