Sunday Read: August Ends - Reflection and Preparation
August is ending. Tomorrow begins September - the transition from summer to fall, from vacation mode to school year, from long days to shortening light. You've walked through the final full month of summer. Thirty-one days of heat, growth, ordinary time. What did August teach you?
Perhaps about finding strength in weakness - discovering that God's power shows most clearly through your inadequacy, that weakness forces dependence that strength prevents. Perhaps about loving enemies - choosing their good despite how they've treated you, praying for those who opposed you, refusing to respond to hate with more hate.
Perhaps about inviting God's searching - asking him to reveal what you can't see about yourself, exposing pride masquerading as confidence, bitterness masquerading as justice. Perhaps about the tragedy of religious violence - remembering how certainty without love produces atrocities, how defending truth doesn't justify destroying people.
Perhaps about joy that transcends circumstances - accessing supernatural joy rooted in God's character rather than your situation, finding strength in the Lord's joy when everything is falling apart. Perhaps about trust when you can't understand - submitting to God's wisdom when it contradicts your comprehension, letting go of need for everything to make sense.
August reminded you that God's ways are higher than yours. His thoughts surpass your thoughts. His power works through weakness. His love extends to enemies. His joy sustains through suffering. His presence remains constant even when you can't sense it. These truths don't change with seasons or circumstances.
As August ends, resist evaluating the month by achievement metrics. Did you accomplish everything planned? Probably not. Did you avoid all failures? Unlikely. But God doesn't measure months by achievements. He measures by faithfulness - whether you kept trusting despite confusion, kept obeying despite difficulty, kept seeking him despite dryness.
Lamentations promises: "Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). Notice when compassions renew - every morning. Not every month, not every season - every single morning. God's mercy operates on daily cycle, constantly available, reliably renewed.
This means August's failures don't determine September's potential. This month's exhaustion doesn't dictate next month's strength. The disappointments you experienced don't define possibilities ahead. Each morning - including tomorrow, September 1st - brings fresh mercy, new grace, another opportunity to trust God.
As August ends and September begins, bring forward what this month taught. Don't just acknowledge insights and forget them. Let them shape how you live, what you choose, who you become. The month is ending but your formation continues. August prepared you for September. God's faithfulness continues. New month, same faithful God.
Tomorrow is new day, new month, new opportunity to trust God's faithfulness. August taught you lessons you needed to learn. September will bring lessons you don't yet know you need. Through it all, God remains faithful. That's enough to end August with gratitude and begin September with hope.
