Wednesday Prayer: The Nativity of John

Wednesday Prayer: The Nativity of John

Father, today we remember John's birth to elderly, barren parents - a miracle demonstrating your power to work beyond natural limitations. You gave Zechariah and Elizabeth a son in impossible circumstances, then filled that son with purpose before he was born. John would prepare Israel for Messiah's coming, point people to Jesus, and die for speaking truth to power.

Thank you for John's example. He spent thirty years in obscurity preparing for six months of public ministry. He directed attention away from himself toward Jesus. He spoke truth regardless of cost. He understood his purpose: "He must increase, but I must decrease." That's my calling too - preparing hearts for Jesus, pointing people to Christ, decreasing so he increases.

Give me John's boldness to speak truth, his humility to elevate Jesus above self, his faithfulness regardless of cost. Help me recognize that obscurity might be preparation, that greatness means pointing to Christ, that your timing is perfect even when impossibly late. John prepared the way. Help me do the same.
