Friday Prayer: Promises Not Presumptions
Lord, I've been claiming your promises for things you never actually promised. I've attached your authority to my desires, your guarantee to my preferences. I've called my interpretations your prophecies, my plans your promises. When they didn't materialize, I blamed you for breaking promises you never made.
Forgive my presumption. Teach me the difference between your explicit promises and my hopeful interpretations. Help me build faith on what you've actually said, not what I wish you'd said. Let me rest in promises you've clearly made without manufacturing ones you haven't.
Your real promises are better than my presumptions anyway. You've promised to never leave me - that's better than promising specific circumstances. You've promised your grace is sufficient - that's better than promising easy life. You've promised to complete your work in me - that's better than promising immediate breakthrough. Help me trust what you've actually promised and release what I've only presumed.
