Monday Prayer: Never Let Me Justify Violence

Father, August 24, 1572 reveals how Christians convinced of their righteousness committed horrific evil. Believers celebrating your love murdered other believers in your name. Theological conviction combined with political power and tribal identity produced genocide. Forgive your church for this atrocity and all violence committed in your name.

Search my heart for seeds of the same poison. Do I hold convictions so rigidly that I've dehumanized those who disagree? Do I use religious language to justify hatred toward people who think differently? Have I confused defending truth with destroying people? Show me where certainty without love, conviction without humility, orthodoxy without compassion are growing in me.

Help me remember that all humans - including theological and political opponents - bear your image and deserve love. Truth matters, but the way of Jesus is love even toward enemies. When I'm certain I'm right and others are dangerously wrong, help me choose the harder path: loving those who disagree while maintaining truth, treating opponents as humans not enemies, defending convictions without destroying people. Never let me justify violence in your name.
