Thursday Prayer: Body and Blood
Jesus, you took bread and said "this is my body." You took wine and said "this is my blood." What did you mean? Was it metaphor, mystery, or miracle? I don't fully understand, but I know you meant something profound - you meet me through physical means, not just spiritual concepts. You became flesh to redeem flesh.
Thank you that you don't relate to me only through abstract ideas but through tangible elements - bread I taste, wine I swallow, water that washed me in baptism. You work through matter because you created matter and called it good. You rose bodily because bodies matter. You promise new earth because creation will be redeemed, not abandoned.
When I take communion, whether I understand the mystery or not, let me encounter you truly. Don't let it become empty ritual or mere mental exercise. You're present - however that works, you're present. Your body was broken for me. Your blood was poured out for me. In bread and wine, help me receive you. Corpus Christi - body of Christ, present in elements, present in believers, present in the world you're redeeming.
