Wednesday Prayer: Rendering to Caesar and to God
Jesus, the Pharisees tried to trap you with a tax question and you answered with perfect wisdom: render to Caesar what is Caesar's, to God what is God's. You acknowledged earthly authority's legitimate claims while establishing God's ultimate claims. Help me live in that tension.
I confess I often resent taxes, complaining about rates while living in prosperity most of the world can't imagine. I spend enormous energy minimizing tax burden while giving minimally to kingdom work. I've inverted priorities - Caesar gets reluctant compliance while you get leftover generosity. Forgive me.
Teach me to pay taxes honestly without resentment, recognizing them as legitimate obligation to earthly authority. Help me steward resources wisely, using legal means to minimize burden without illegal means to evade responsibility. But more importantly, help me render to you what's yours - not just tithe but everything, not grudging obligation but joyful surrender, not Caesar's leftovers but kingdom priority. You deserve more than Caesar. Help me give accordingly.
